Native Plant Academy
HCS led the first of its kind Native Plant Academy for young people in the region. The students aged 12 to 19 years, attended a 6 week cohort to learn of the biodiversity in flora, fauna, botany and the ecosystem. This year, Healthy Community Services led its second successful Native Plant Academy for young adults in our region. Enjoy highlights of that journey in the gallery below, and joy HCS is congratulating the NPA Class of 2021!
Also participants learned specifically about native plants unique to the state and the migratory patterns of birds in Southeast Louisiana to the Barrier Islands. Finally, the students got an up close view of the Bayou Bienvenue Flood Reduction Protection System. The students learned how the system protects and reduces storm surge to the City of New Orleans.
This interactive tour teaches participants how to become better environmental stewards, how to better manage water systems and how to maintain a healthy ecosystem. Students are referred to the program by either a teacher, school counselor or recognized as a Water Wise Neighborhood Champion. This program is open to students of Orleans, Jefferson, St. Bernard and Plaquemines parishes.
